South Western Railways in collaboration with mintbook, had experimented and piloted the digital library project in the waiting rooms at KSR Railway Station in Bengaluru for 3 months from August 2017 – October 2017. Within the premises of the railway stations, e-Book Clubs were set up in the waiting halls with customized reading / viewing materials depending on passenger categories. The objective of this project was to enhance eKnowledge & leisure during passengers’ waiting and travel time and also to offer an innovative model to empower the citizens in digital literacy and other allied areas such as financial literacy; entrepreneurship opportunities; know your State; learn Kannada & English, etc. Under this project, within the premises of the railway stations, an E-Book Club Centre was set up in the waiting halls. Passengers easily accessed the content from their devices such as mobile phones, tablets and laptops. Topics that were accessed frequently, from the library were Kannada literature, financial banking, insurance, personality development, communication, interview etiquettes, school concept videos and story books in Kannada, Hindi and English.

The outcome of this project has been overwhelming, particularly from the general class waiting rooms and specifically from youth and women. This project helped in enhancing knowledge & leisure during passengers’ waiting and travel time and provided knowledge tools such as digital library, competitive exam preparation materials, interview tips and certain skill developments to capture the need of today’s youth population using Railways for related travels. Not only this, it also promoted developmental schemes of the Railways.
